it's not a pun, but rather an example of don't starve's bizzare gameplay mechanics. yes, you can throw a boomerang after a moving target and it will chase them, like a heat seeking missile. 
depending on your target and how far away you've moved, it really can take days to come back. it's always after you've forgotten about throwing a boomerang in the first place.
